The journey
How we got here
- 1
July 2021
A caption editor in your pocket
Subera began with a simple annoyance. Creators shot everything on their phones, but captioning still meant moving to a laptop, uploading somewhere, waiting and fixing timings by hand. The first line of Subera was written in July 2021 with one goal: do the whole job on the phone.
The first version could write automatic captions in 80+ languages, translate them into 100+, let you fix them in a small mobile editor and export SRT, VTT, SBV and DFXP files. By August there was a guide to the editor and a "vote for a feature" board, because we wanted the people using Subera to decide what came next.

September 2021
Captions burned into the video
The most requested feature arrived: export a video with captions drawn right into it, with a font library, colours, a background box and a quick five-second preview. The announcement promised "Option to upload your own font coming very soon." It took longer than "very soon", but it is finally here in Subera 2.0.

December 2021
Try first, sign up later
Version 1.2.0 let anyone try automatic captions without creating an account and added a dedicated option for subtitles (so a wrongly picked language stopped producing nonsense).

2022
Half a million creators
Word spread faster than we ever planned. Creators, teachers and podcasters from all over the world found Subera, and in July 2022 it arrived on the iPhone. Version after version, the app grew with the people using it.

2023
Stepping back, listening
The original Subera was a big effort that never got to reach its full potential: the return was too low to justify the time it needed, so in 2023 we made the call to pause development. The last update of the original app shipped on November 3, 2023.
Subera kept doing its job anyway: captioning every day and passing 500,000 downloads on Google Play. Meanwhile we kept a list of everything people asked for. Smoother exports. Files that are easy to find. A simpler sign-in. Smarter captions. That list became the plan for what came next.

2026
Second wind
While Subera rested, AI changed the maths. Speech recognition got close to human and language models learned to understand whole sentences. Just as important, AI became our helping hand: work that once took months now takes days, and things that used to be hard are now easy. For the first time, Subera could be built the way it always deserved, and keep improving fast.
So we came back. Subera 4.0 is not a patch on the old app. It is a new app and a new captioning engine, built from zero with AI at its core: sleeker, faster and packed with features the original never had.
- Captions timed to every word, broken at the end of each thought
- Names checked and misheard words fixed automatically
- Translation that understands whole sentences, with bilingual subtitles
- Mixed-language captions in the script your audience reads
- A teleprompter that follows your voice, and an AI script writer
- A real editor: timeline, waveform, review mode, find and replace
- Any font, including your own .ttf or .otf
Built on your feedback
You asked. 4.0 delivers.
Real requests from Play Store reviews, quoted anonymously, and how Subera 4.0 answers each one.
You asked
“The app keeps closing whenever you want to export video with caption. You can only save subtitles.”
You asked
“When I want to export the srt file it doesn’t show up on my phone. I looked around and it’s just not there.”
You asked
“I mistakenly deleted the app, and found it hard to locate login. Please make login or sign up easy to find.”
Then and now

A note from the Subera team
To the half a million people who downloaded Subera, and to everyone who kept using it, left a review or sent a suggestion: thank you. You are the reason Subera exists, and the reason it is back.
Subera 4.0 is everything we wanted the app to be in 2021, built with tools that did not exist back then. We read every review and every support request, so keep them coming. The best is still ahead.
